A Center for Shipping
The Delaware River Port Complex in Greater Philadelphia is comprised of active, full-service marine terminals in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
- Philadelphia is the only major port on the East Coast served by three Class 1 railroads (Norfolk Southern, CSX Transportation and Canadian Pacific, all capable of accommodating double-stack trains).
- According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in 2009 the ports of the Delaware River handled 105.2 million short tons of cargo (i.e., domestic, exports and imports); if considered as a single entity, this would rank 5th among U.S. ports.
The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) is the number one perishables port on the East Coast.
The Port of Camden, the nation’s top port for wood products, receives hundreds of ships moving international and domestic cargo annually.
The Port of Wilmington is the top North American port for fresh fruit, bananas and fruit concentrates as well as the largest dock-side cold storage facility.
PRPA and South Jersey Port Corporation (SJPC) form the core of Greater Philadelphia international port system.
In 2007, PRPA welcomed the world’s second largest shipping company – Mediterranean Shipping Company – as a new operator in the port.
